Artist's Statement
Lisa Pullen’s visual imagery is based on a keen sense of mythology, story-telling and personal history. The Night Ladder works are based on Angela’s poems, personal vision and the historical context of the fairy tales of Charles Perrault captured in stark and menacing ink and pencil drawings. Her drawings build these characters up quirkily, with their palpable and thought-provoking sense of quandary, into the context of the contemporary. These drawings are then transcribed onto lino blocks and carved. Like Angela’s poems, she has scrutinized the characters and stories of Perrault to reduce them to their indelible being, their bare bones, dramatically printed in her trademark red and black.
