NightLadder comprises artists Gwenn Tasker, John Doyle, Angela Gardner, Lisa Pullen and Maren Götzmann.
Each artist has an individual established practice, including as a vital part the commitment to works on paper. In recent years, the genre of the Artist Book has become an integral and important part of NightLadder’s collaborative creative work. It allows the artists, apart from actively sharing expertise and equipment, to explore a synergy between individual practices and create a site of conversation, which is at once formal and also spontaneous and fun. NightLadder’s attitudes and working processes are free from hierarchy and notions of individual authorship or solitary genius. The collective reinforces an egalitarian, co-operative way of working, and is critical of the capitalist, well-oiled, large-scale, creative industry machine that fosters a system ruled by a few art elites. NightLadder’s artist books have been on show in exhibitions such as Books by Artists (2015, Webb Gallery, Brisbane), The Spaces Between (2016, Webb Gallery, Brisbane), Artist books and Prints (2016, University of West England’s Centre for Fine Print Research, Bristol, UK) and Connect-ed (2017, BIA Gallery, Brisbane). NightLadder’s project The Anarchist Notebooks from 2015/17 was featured in a conference paper at the ABBE conference in Brisbane in 2017. ![]()
